Charley Gerard’s
Broken Reed
Saxophone QuarTet

We are BRSQ

Charley Gerard is a saxophonist, author and composer. He is a 2019 recipient of the prestigious New Jazz Works grant from Chamber Music America with the generous support of the Doris Duke Foundation.

Charley started The Broken Reed Saxophone Quartet in 2002. As of 2024 the group is Lily White on soprano sax, Dimitri Moderbacher on baritone sax, Charley on alto sax, and Jeff Newell on tenor. (L–R in picture below)

Together, they transport their audience everywhere, from Mozart to New Orleans to Cuba, to the pages of poetry and popular culture. As its name implies, the group is as linked by its sense of humor as it is by its unique sound.

Brilliant music by Gerard!
— Dance Magazine
Broken Reed is anything but broken. Their sound is full-bodied, harmonically strong and appealing, fresh, light-hearted, festive and yet complex and serious. This is a remarkable group!
— Dr. José E. Cruz, President, Jazz/Latino, Inc.
Gerard’s music consists of crystal clarity in tonality and texture. Gerard’s music, as a whole, is incredibly evocative and dramatic, always taking a new twist or turn.
— Saxophonist Magazine (Review of the CD "Songs of Love and Passion")
The audience didn’t just like it, they whooped, yelped, bravoed each selection and each extraordinary musician.
